What is SEA Teacher Project?
The SEA Teacher Project is a program under the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) that provides pre-service student teachers within the region the opportunity to gain teaching experiences abroad. This project started in the year 2015 and it has been transforming future teachers into globally competitive educators through international teaching exposure, cultural exchange, and collaboration across Southeast Asian countries.
What is the purpose of SEA Teacher Project?
The purpose of SEA Teacher Project is to uplift the quality of education and strengthen the interconnectedness of Southeast Asian countries through international exchange where pre-service student teachers are immersed in a whole new learning environment.

Pre-service student teachers will get to meet people from different places who share the same passion and spirit in providing quality education to the youth. Cultural differences become strengths rather than barriers in achieving success and development. With this, participants are able to hone their pedagogical skills, intercultural competence, and they are able contribute to both achieving the SEAMEO's goals and empowering their local education community.
Procedure of SEA Teacher Project
SEA Teachers are set to complete a 4-week long teaching internship in their assigned host schools abroad. The procedure are as follows:
Week 1. Orientation and class observation.
Week 2. Teaching assistant - Working with classroom teacher and lesson plan consolidation.
Week 3. Teaching in classroom - Adequate teaching hours, monitoring, and evaluation by mentor.
Week 4. Reflection and lesson learned - Reflection of student’s performance in general & discussion of the lesson learned. Finalizing blog and report with the mentor's guidance.
Outcomes of the SEA Teacher Project
As a SEA Teacher participant, I believe that the SEA Teacher Project has been highly beneficial and transformative for me. First and foremost, my pedagogical skills were enhanced as I was exposed to new teaching strategies, practices, and methods throughout the program. In addition, I gained invaluable teaching insights from my mentor and cooperating teachers in the host school. Second, my English proficiency and communication skills further developed because I constantly interacted and communicated with other people using the English language, which also served as the primary medium of instruction during my teaching sessions.
Third, I developed adaptability and intercultural competence by learning how to effectively interact with people from different cultural backgrounds with respect, openness, and deep understanding. Fourth, my local educational community can also benefit from the new knowledge and experiences that I gained and shared through my blog and reflections. Lastly, the SEA Teacher Project allowed me to gain personal wisdom and meaningful experiences that continuously nourish my growth both as a person and as a future professional educator.
Challenges of the SEA Teacher Project
Although I did not struggle that much in general during the SEA Teacher Program, there were still some challenges that I encountered, especially in teaching. You could even say that we were pampered, but I guess that is simply the true meaning of hospitality, and I am trully grateful for everything that the host university and school have done for us. However, when it comes to teaching, I struggled in adapting to the needs and English proficiency of the learners. Most of them were either shy or unable to confidently speak the target language, which sometimes made communication and participation challenging. Because of this, as a countermeasure, I slowed down my speech rate, used simple and direct language, and incorporated TEFL methods such as Total Physical Response (TPR) and translanguaging to make the lessons more accessible and understandable for the learners. I also sought guidance from my cooperating teacher, Ms. Zia, and from Ma’am Ade, who provided me with invaluable insights in forming connections with the students and delivering purposeful lessons. Through these experiences, I realized that effective teaching requires not only content knowledge and preparation but also patience, flexibility, and a deep understanding of the learners’ context and needs.
Overall Impression
My overall impression of the SEA Teacher Project is that it is a great opportunity to transform by gaining purposeful teaching experiences abroad. It is not merely a “trip to Thailand” or a “trip to Indonesia” kind of experience, but rather a journey toward growth, learning, and success. Through the program, I realized that SEA Teacher is a highly engaging and transformative initiative that comes with both meaningful experiences and inevitable challenges. It allowed me to broaden my educational and cultural perspectives, develop adaptability, and gain a deeper understanding of learners from different backgrounds. More importantly, the program helped me grow not only as a future educator but also as a person. Through the friendships, classroom experiences, cultural immersion, and realizations I gained throughout the journey, I became more confident, reflective, and purposeful in my desire to become an effective educator in the future.
Suggestion for Future Improvements
My suggestion for future improvements would be a longer internship duration, as this would help future SEA Teachers gain deeper cultural understanding, further develop their pedagogical practices, and form stronger and more meaningful connections with the students, teachers, and local community. I hope that concerns surrounding this suggestion, such as visa expiration and other logistical limitations, will also be given proper consideration in order to help realize the full potential of the program and provide participants with a more immersive and enriching experience.
