Teaching Methods Used by the Teacher
When I was in MAN 1 Kendari, I have had the opportunity to work with Ms. Fauzia At Tin S.Pd., whose mentorship greatly contributed to my professional growth. However, her contribution did not come from feedback alone—her teaching performance that I personally observed also played a significant role in molding my understanding of what an effective teaching looks like. During my observation and teaching assistantship sessions, I noticed that Ms. Zia used various teaching methods such as direct instruction, audio-visual approach, gamified learning, and activity-based learning. She implements these methods with structure, patience, and understanding of the learners' condition, ensuring that each learner could meaningfully understand the lesson being delivered. Through this experience with my cooperating teacher, I understood that even if a teacher utilizes various teaching methods, it all comes down to how they are used and whether they are appropriate for the context of the learners.
Teaching and Learning Materials & Innovation used in the Classroom
Ms. Zia mainly utilized audio-visual tool, worksheet, gamified instructional material, and the smart TV in facilitating the lesson. These materials supported the learning process by providing students with textual and visual input, which enhanced their understanding and made the discussions more engaging and interactive. In my view, these teaching and learning materials are enough to support learning. However, as the needs of learners and the educational landscape continue to evolve, I believe that teachers must also adapt by integrating more innovative and technology-based instructional materials. In the future, I plan to utilize tools such as podcasts, online presentations, collaborative word processors, gamified learning platforms, and e-portfolios to further develop learners’ macro skills, knowledge construction, and knowledge retention. Today, students are accustomed to the use of technology. They are referred to as "digital natives." With that, I believe that integrating technology in the learning process would make learning more relevant, engaging, and meaningful for students.
Authentic Assessment Used by the Teachers
Although the board game was primarily used for game-based learning, it also functioned as an authentic assessment because it did not only assess students’ understanding of degrees of comparison through written responses, but also through real interaction and communication. Some prompts asked learners to share something about themselves, interact with their classmates, and even take a picture with the tallest person in the class. Through these simple yet engaging tasks, the lesson became more authentic, collaborative, and enjoyable for the learners.
