SCHOOL PROFILE
Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 1 Kendari, also known as MAN 1 Kendari, is one of the most recognized Islamic high schools in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Established in 1990 through the conversion of PGAN Kendari, the school has grown into a respected institution known for balancing academic excellence with strong Islamic values. MAN 1 offers programs in general secondary education integrated with Islamic education, helping students become academically capable, disciplined, and morally grounded individuals. Throughout the years, the school has built a reputation for producing competitive students who excel not only in academics but also in leadership and extracurricular activities. As of 2026, the institution is headed by La Tangkalalo, S.Pd., M.Pd., whose leadership continues to promote innovation, discipline, and student development within the school community.
Although Southeast Sulawesi has a predominantly Muslim population, MAN 1 Kendari is open to students from different religions, welcoming diversity and seeing education as a bridge that unites society.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT SYSTEM
One of the things that stood out the most during my internship at MAN 1 Kendari was the strong support system within the school. The teachers were not only knowledgeable and passionate about teaching, but they were also warm, approachable, and genuinely caring toward their students. They created a learning environment where learners felt comfortable asking questions, participating in discussions, and expressing themselves freely. The school also provides well-maintained facilities that contribute to effective learning, including clean and well-ventilated classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities, and technology-assisted learning spaces. Another remarkable practice observed in the institution is the assignment of two teachers in some core subjects such as English and Physics to ensure that students receive enough guidance and support in their learning. I personally think that this set-up should also be adapted in other countries, too. Because it does not only save the teacher from excessive workload, which greatly affect their teaching performance, but also ensure that the individual needs of learners are thoroughly addressed.
More than the facilities and academic practices, what made the experience truly meaningful was the people within the institution. From the teachers and students to the headmaster himself, everyone welcomed us with kindness, warmth, and genuine hospitality. Throughout our stay, we never felt like strangers or outsiders in a foreign country. Instead, MAN 1 Kendari gave us a sense of comfort and belonging that made the school feel like a second home.
CULTURAL PROFILE AND PRACTICES OF THE INSTITUTION AND COMMUNITY
MAN 1 Kendari promotes a culture rooted in discipline, respect, faith, and cultural appreciation. As an Islamic institution, the school regularly practices religious activities and worship, including Friday prayers where male and female students pray separately. Before prayer, male students perform wudu (ablution), a purification practice observed with sincerity and discipline. Students are also guided to maintain proper boundaries and behavior inside the school, reflecting the institution’s strong moral values. Aside from religious practices, the school actively encourages students to participate in academic and extracurricular competitions such as debates, singing contests, sports events, and other local and national activities. The institution also celebrates culturally relevant events where traditional games and performances are practiced to preserve local culture and strengthen camaraderie among students. These events include: Pekan Olahraga Dan SENI (PORSENI), which is a sports and arts week; EXPO, where students create their own bazaar at the beginning of the school year in February; and MAYS.COM, which is a combination of academic and art competition. More importantly, the school community fosters close relationships between teachers and learners, making it seem as though everyone knows one another within the school. This creates a friendly and supportive environment, which not only represents the school identity, but also serves as an instrument of forming meaningful and purposeful relationships. With the kindness and hospitality shown by the learners, teachers, and staff, I am certain that anyone who enters MAN 1 Kendari will immediately feel welcomed and at home.
